Digital ‘rights’ and ‘permissions’

Tue ,27/04/2010

This is a topic which has been bothering me for quite a few months now. Many of my already-published author friends are suffering at the hands of some unethical individuals (remaining polite is best, perhaps, despite my strong desire not to) who think it is their right to steal my friend’s works. It adversely affects their lives, and incomes. And I’m getting to the point where I wish there was something I could do about it, personally.

But, I can’t.

Loreena McKennitt addressed the Canadian government as part of a discussion surrounding copyright, piracy, and digital ‘rights’. She came to the table with the effect it has on her, directly.
Short version.
Long version.

I hope her concerns were well-received. And properly understood.

I’m going to bookmark this for later

The Submission Black Hole

It’s a nifty website that tracks response times from paying markets. You can choose to publish your results to the ‘response times newsgroup’ at SFF.net (with your name, etc).

Good to know.

My short story, The White Cat, got accepted into Scheherezade’s Facade! Things are a bit up in the air about who will publish, when, and where… But, patience is a virtue (:

So, we waits.

I’m still coasting on the squee…

(and buckling down to keep writing. nothing like a bit of positive reinforcement to keep you motivated ;)

I’ve deleted my book off the website. It’s sad and shabby scrabbling which I refuse to participate in. Plus, the prevalence of ‘Our Partners Who Can Help You Self-Publish’ ads make me somewhat nauseous.

I remember that RWA went postal about Harlequin trying something like this. Sort of wondering why there isn’t a mushroom cloud on the horizon as we speak…

Ah well. I got a lot of nice comments.

Live and learn. TANSTAAFL.

I was pointed to this by a friend who loves fairytales as much as I do.

Thanks Mr.B. With a love of stories like that, I’m pretty sure your children will be enchanted by the same magic you were.

What inspires me

Music. It’s not just the food of love, it’s also the food of life.

Loreena McKennitt is a local musician who has, through her own gutsiness (did I spell that right? gutsyness? hmm.) and talent, gone worldwide. With no compromises.

Her first album Elemental inspired me when I discovered it in highschool. She had been a professional musician for almost ten years, and luckily there were a few albums out by then, so I could devour a few at a time. I wanted to sing and play the harp, and live in a world described by her music. Basically, I wanted to be her ;p
